ABOUT FOGANA
Connecting generations through Garba, Raas, Folk Arts & Community
Celebrate culture together across generations
Federation of Gujarati Associations of North America (FOGANA) is a nonprofit umbrella organization formed around 1979–1980 to preserve, promote, and celebrate Gujarati culture across North America.
Its core mission is to connect Gujarati communities in the U.S. and Canada while helping younger generations stay engaged with their cultural heritage through arts, language, music, and community events.
FOGANA hosts major conventions that bring together Gujarati associations from across North America for cultural showcases, networking, youth activities, and competitions.
Youth Engagement: A major goal is encouraging second- and third-generation Gujarati Americans and Canadians to maintain a connection to Gujarati identity, language, and traditions.
Community Network: It acts as a federation linking many regional Gujarati associations throughout the U.S. and Canada.
FOGANA has become one of the most recognized Gujarati cultural organizations in North America, particularly within the Gujarati diaspora community.
Key aspects of FOGANA include
Garba
Garba is a timeless expression of Gujarati culture, passed down through generations as a symbol of devotion, rhythm, and community celebration. It brings people together in a shared cultural experience rooted in tradition.
The word “Garba” comes from “Garbhadeep,” representing a lamp placed inside an earthen pot, symbolizing life and energy. The dance is traditionally performed in circular formations around a central light or idol.
Garba exists in three forms—Ancient (Prachin), Modern (Arvachin), and Classical—each preserving its unique style while maintaining the essence of circular movement and synchronized group expression.
RAAS
Raas is a high-energy Gujarati folk dance performed with dandiyas (wooden sticks), combining rhythm, coordination, and vibrant group interaction. It reflects both tradition and dynamic performance energy.
Dancers perform in pairs or formations, striking sticks in sync with the music while moving through patterns that emphasize timing, precision, and teamwork. The choreography often includes rotations, lines, and structured formations.
While creativity is encouraged, Raas must retain its Gujarati cultural authenticity. Elements like unrelated dance styles or acrobatics are avoided to preserve the traditional identity and rhythmic integrity of the performance.
FOLK
Gujarati folk dances represent a rich diversity of traditions, reflecting the cultural, social, and regional identity of different communities across Gujarat. Each style carries its own story and significance.
These dances can be performed for various occasions, including religious celebrations, social gatherings, tribal rituals, and weddings. They often incorporate music, storytelling, and symbolic movements.
Folk performances may include the use of props, costumes, and coordinated group formations, allowing for creative expression while staying rooted in authentic cultural themes and traditions.
